Grid Engineer

Join us in shaping a sustainable energy future!

As a Grid Engineer at Wind2 and Solar2, you will play a pivotal role in accelerating the transition to renewable energy. You'll work alongside a dedicated team to identify, secure, and manage grid capacity for our innovative wind and solar projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify grid connection opportunities within the UK's distribution and transmission network.
  • Process new grid connection applications with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and the Electricity System Operator (ESO).
  • Secure new grid connections for renewable energy projects.
  • Compile comprehensive grid studies.
  • Collaborate closely with DNOs, Transmission System Operators (TSOs), Independent Connection Providers (ICPs), and Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs) to advance our projects.

Reporting to the Technical Director, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing optimal grid connection solutions, completing application forms, associated Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), and reviewing grid offers.
  • Thoroughly analysing and interrogating grid connection offers to ensure technical and commercial accuracy, challenging network companies on any discrepancies.
  • Managing a portfolio of accepted grid offers, ensuring timely contract payments and progress milestones are met.
  • Overseeing Independent Connection Providers (ICPs) and design consultants for contestable works and power system studies, specifying, commissioning, and managing grid consultant engagements.
  • Collaborating with the project management team to integrate grid connection activities into project programs and budgets, ensuring key grid milestones are aligned with the overall project plan.
  • Managing the execution of grid-related tasks and providing timely feedback to project managers.
  • Fostering strong relationships with UK Distribution and Transmission network owners/operators, electrical consultants, ICPs, and Independent Network Operators.
  • Actively participating in grid seminars and webinars to stay updated on grid policy changes and share insights with the wider team.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of Health and Safety legislation within the renewable energy sector.
  • Technical knowledge of electricity grid planning/operations, relevant codes and regulations (including G99), and electrical system design. Previous experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience in preparing grid applications for generation projects.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with DNOs, TSOs, ESOs, and ICPs to secure and manage grid connection offers and explore alternative connection options that accelerate connection times or reduce costs.
  • Understanding of Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS) and Distribution Network Use of System (DNUoS) charges and their impact on project commercial viability.
  • Familiarity with TMO4+ grid reforms.
  • Experience with Balancing Mechanism Implementation and Settlement Arrangements (BELLA) and Balancing Mechanism Grid Arrangements (BEGA) applications, as well as Active Network Management (ANM) curtailment assessments.
  • Knowledge of grid cancellation charge statements and payment tracking.
  • Understanding of the interplay between grid connections and planning permission/land consent processes to identify potential project risks.

Essential Skills:

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Technical report writing proficiency.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven project planning and management abilities.
  • Ability to translate technical complexities of grid connections to non-technical team members.
  • Confidence and proficiency in presenting to and chairing meetings with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Flexibility to travel regularly throughout the UK at short notice, if required.
  • Commercial awareness regarding contract compliance, cost control, and the relative value of engineering solutions.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary package.
  • Excellent benefits package including pension, health and life insurance, green-car salary sacrifice scheme, cycle to work scheme and a performance-linked bonus.
