Wind2 Supporting Theatr Clwyd’s Young People Programme
Wind2 has been a proud supporter of Theatr Clwyd for a number of years through its business membership programme. On learning about the theatre’s outreach work with young people, Wind2 was keen to ensure its contribution could directly support this vital programme.
Through engagement with the local community, Theatr Clwyd identified that young people in care, under social services, or with caring responsibilities needed a safe space where they could simply be children. For the past five years, and in partnership with social services, the theatre has provided two annual week-long workshops for groups of up to 10 young people aged between 5 and 18.
The workshops give participants the chance to explore all aspects of theatre—from acting and costume design to lighting, set building, music, and dance—while also receiving a healthy breakfast and lunch each day. For many of the children, this is a crucial foundation, ensuring they start the day well-nourished and ready to engage with the activities.
For children under the care of social services, regular clubs are often out of reach due to barriers such as transport or financial constraints. With the support of businesses like Wind2, however, these barriers can be removed. Contributions help cover club subscriptions and transport costs, ensuring young people can attend regularly and benefit fully.
Sarah Smith, Wind2’s Managing Director, said “As a North Wales-based and headquartered business, Wind2 is committed to encouraging talent to remain in the area and to create opportunities for young people. By engaging with young people under the care of social services, Theatr Clwyd is showing them that their circumstances do not need to limit their future. There are opportunities available, and this programme helps to open those doors.”
Janet Wagstaff, Wind2’s PR and Marketing Manager who experienced a workshop first-hand, said “The work the team do with young people is incredible. Knowing how difficult some of their lives are and then seeing them given the chance to experience different aspects of the theatre, was very humbling. The work Theatr Clwyd is doing here is vital. I spoke with members of the social services team who explained how the trust built with theatre staff has even helped raise additional safeguarding issues.”
Theatr Clwyd Community Producer, Tom Hayes said, “We are delighted that Wind2 has invested time to fully understand the importance of this work. The support of local businesses like Wind2 is invaluable in helping us continue and expand this vital work to give vulnerable young people the best chances. “
The impact of these workshops cannot be overstated. They provide young people—many of whom face challenging circumstances—with opportunities to build confidence, form new friendships, and discover a more positive path for their future. They also create a safe space where young people feel able to share concerns that they may not otherwise raise with their social workers.
